Math club excels
A team from the Scotts Valley High School Math Club finished fifth place in the nation in the annual Collaborative Problem-Solving contest, tying with Palo Alto High School.
The team was made up of Andrew Brockmann, Hood Chatham and Luke Thornley.
The 15-problem, week-long test develops real-world skills by emphasizing collaboration, research and application of technology to solve complex and difficult problems.
The trio tied with Palo Alto High’s team with 84 points. It was Scotts Valley’s top finish; last year, students scored in 11th place, following previous scores of 15th and 17th place.

Local student wins scholarship
Crystal Rozinsky of Scotts Valley High School was awarded a $500 American Dream Scholarship to attend Cabrillo College at a ceremony Tuesday, May 24.
The scholarship has been awarded by the Ow family for the past 22 years to ethnic or disadvantaged students in Santa Cruz County. This year, the Ows gave a record 80 scholarships to area high school students.
School group travels to Mexico
Seventh-graders from Baymonte Christian School returned from Tecate, Mexico, last week following a five-day mission trip to help construct a recreation area on the grounds of Rancho de Sus Niños Orphanage’s newly established high school.
This is the 14th consecutive year Baymonte students have traveled to help Rancho de Sus Niños. The orphanage was founded by 1987 Bethany University graduate Steve Horner and has grown to include a day care center for more than 200 children, Christian schools, a youth center, a Bible college and a hospice home.
Bible teacher Kathleen Ellenwood, Spanish teacher Mike Lanham, science teacher Trista Smestad, history teacher Greg Olson, Principal Steve Patterson and many parents accompanied the students on the trip.
Ad design contest winners named
The Scotts Valley Water District announced the winners of its third annual print design ad contest. First place and a $500 prize went to Julia Pini. Second and $300 went to Kelsey Van Valer, and Callum Percy finished third for $200.
The posters promoted water conservation, and the winning ad will be printed in a local newspaper.
Seaman completes basic
Navy Seaman Apprentice Adam Berry recently completed U.S. Navy boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Robert B. Berry, of Boulder Creek.
During the eight-week program, Berry completed training that included classroom study and practical instruction in naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety, as well as physical fitness.
Berry is a 2008 graduate of San Lorenzo Valley High School.
