Local artisans win chair competition
Dawn Teall and Pam Nielsen of Scotts Valley Artisans won first place in the Rare Chair Affair, a Santa Cruz County Symphony League fundraising event.
More than 30 artists decorated a chair for the Aug. 20 event at the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz.
Teall and Nielson’s chair, titled “The Queen of Hearts,” earned first-place honors. Money raised from entry will support the Santa Cruz County Symphony’s classical concerts at the Santa Cruz Civic and Mello Center, as well as the Youth and Family programs, which introduce more than 4,000 young people to classical music each year.
Felton resident earns dean’s list honors
Talya Caspi was awarded a dean’s list accolade for the spring 2011 semester at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.
Caspi, a Felton resident, earned a GPA of 3.4 or higher at the East Coast university.
Ben Lomond resident earns 4.0
Alison Sutherlin of Ben Lomond was named to the dean’s list for both the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.
She has maintained a 4.0 GPA while majoring in interior design and minoring in business management.
Sutherlin is among the 1,120 Harding University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring 2011 semester. The dean’s list is published each semester by Dr. Larry Long, university provost, honoring those who have achieved high academic standing.
Airman graduates training
Air Force Airman Jeremy R. Bartos graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Bartos completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Bartos is a 2004 San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate and the son of Terri Bartos of Santa Cruz.
Local attends Brown
Laurel Brigham of Scotts Valley and Carmichael took part in the Brown University pre-college program this summer in Rhode Island and completed a course in the philosophy department.
Brigham is a junior in the International Baccalaureate program at Mira Loma High School in Carmichael.
