SLV grad completes Navy training
Navy Seaman Apprentice Dylan R. Charette, son of David R. Charette of Felton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Charette completed training courses that included classroom study and practical instruction in first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety and naval customs, all designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
Charette is a 2010 graduate of San Lorenzo Valley High School.
 Local graduates with high honors
Joanie Veda Maro recently graduated with highest honors from University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor’s degree in Near Eastern archaeology.
With an overall GPA of 3.98, Maro was nominated for the prestigious University Medal and was on the Dean’s List. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Golden Key International Honour Society and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She served as the president of the Near Eastern Studies Students Association at UC Berkeley and was accepted into Teach For America.
Maro is a 2008 graduate of San Lorenzo Valley High School and a 2010 graduate of Cabrillo College, where she also earned high honors.
She plans to take a year off before graduate school and will work for the California Association of Museums.
 Student makes dean’s list
Kevin Kearney, a 2008 graduate of Scotts Valley High School, earned placement on the Gonzaga University President’s List for the spring semester. To qualify for the list, a student must finish the semester with a 3.7 t 4.0 GPA.
