Pvt. Assigned to airborne division
U.S. Army Pvt. Kyle J. Higgins graduated from Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Ga. on June 6 as a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout. Higgins will be assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Screaming Eagles, currently at Fort Campbell, Ky.
Higgins grew up in the San Lorenzo Valley until 2011 when his family moved to Washington. Higgins graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Vancouver, Wash. He is the son of Marcie Johnson Higgins and grandson of Craig and Sunshine Johnson of Boulder Creek.
CHP officer honored for drunk driving work
Santa Cruz area California Highway Patrol Officer Sarah Jackson was honored by Mother’s Against Drunk Driving at a statewide awards ceremony Saturday, June 1 for her work educating the community about alcohol and impaired driving. She is one of eight CHP officers across the state to win the award and the first from Santa Cruz.
Local earns doctorate
Felton’s Kelsey Kallioinen graduated this spring with a doctorate in physical therapy from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.
Scotts Valley resident graduates with honors
Anastasiya V. Menshikova of Scotts Valley graduated from the University of San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in Economics on May 26. She graduated magna cum laude. 
Felton resident heads to Air Force Academy
Matthew P. Shisler, a graduate of United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School and resident of Felton, will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was appointed to the academy by Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, during a ceremony May 30 at Moffett Field in Mountain View.
Ben Lomond resident named to deans list
Ben Lomond resident Alison Sutherlin was named to the dean’s list at Harding University in Searcy, Ark. Sutherlin, a senior interior design major, achieved a grade point average of 3.65 or better in the spring semester.
Local author wins award
Anita Telle was named the winner of the 2013 San Francisco Book Festival in the Children’s Book category. Telle, of Scotts Valley, is the author of three children’s books including “A Little Different and All Perfect,” which was the winning entry at the festival. The book teaches children not to judge others by the way they look. Less than five percent of the festival entries are honored with awards. 
Telle is also the president and founder of ASTI Life, a natural skin care company.
