Vine Hill student wins Bookshop Santa Cruz writing contest
Jennifer Leishman, a fourth-grade student at Vine Hill Elementary School was recently announced as her age group’s winner of the Bookshop Santa Cruz story competition for her story “Anne Frank’s Friend: The Story of a Time Traveling Girl.”
A combination historical fiction/time travel adventure, Leishman’s inspiration for the story came from her interest in World War II and her admiration for Anne Frank.
“We both like to write. I thought about what a loss to the world Anne Frank’s death was at such a young age.”
Her story features a modern-day character named Mira, who travels through time to meet Anne Frank. Mira decides to do what she can to intervene in the fate of Anne Frank, so she can continue to write for decades to follow.
Jennifer is an avid reader of American Girl books and The Babysitters Club series and  hopes to continue with her writing.
