Gail McClelland of Scotts Valley got creative in fundraising for the June 6 marathon she is set to run for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training in San Diego.
McClelland, an artist who painted a mural of the four seasons at Camp Evers on Mount Hermon Road at Scotts Valley Drive, decided she would raffle off her services to raise money for the race.
She sold $10 raffle tickets for a chance to win a 24 inch-by-24 inch portrait of a pet. Kelly Gladder, the owner of Mint in Scotts Valley, allowed her to hang sample work and sell tickets. In a drawing last week, Jeff and Marian Kraft of Scotts Valley won the prize.
In total, she raised $1,800 for the cause.
For McClelland, it will be her first marathon. She is running in honor of her neighbor, Babs St. Claire.
Nature academy students win awards
A group of sixth-graders from the San Lorenzo Valley Middle School Nature Academy won an award at the April 24 Tech Museum of Innovation’s annual Tech Challenge.
The four-person team — Max Bauerle, Robert Adams, Megan Marro and Katie Maxwell — competed as The Zero Gravity Gang and won first place in the Style and Presentation Category for best verbal presentation.
4-H’ers sew pillow cases
Scotts Valley 4-H and Judy’s Sewing Center in Scotts Valley recently teamed up for the Million Pillow Cases Project on April 28 and 29.
Leaders Mindy Gillen and Rosa Kitchen provided sewing machines and taught attendees how to create pillow cases. Youth from all the 4-H clubs in the county and some local Girl Scouts were invited to join.
The participants created at least two pillow cases each — one to donate and one to keep. The donated pillow cases will be given to children involved in county government in some capacity and will count toward the nationwide million-pillowcase challenge.
The Scotts Valley 4-H club meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month at St. Phillips Episcopal Church, 5271 Scotts Valley Drive.
