San Lorenzo Valley High School students Ian Mallet and Caitlin Powell were nominated as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Out of 1.5 million test-takers, they are in the top half of the top 1 percent of all students who took the PSAT a year ago. They will apply to become finalists and scholarship winners.
Two SLV students, Emily Dolson and Jonathan Lilley, qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by scoring a 4 or 5 out of 5 on eight or more Advanced Placement exams.
Scotts Valley High’s Benjamin Udo is a semifinalist for the National Achievement Award, an academic competition established in 1964 for black students. Udo scored well on his PSATs, qualifying him for the award.
Local Girl Scouts earn Gold Awards
Lilly Wellington of Felton and Kelly Bacon of Santa Cruz, members of Girl Scout Troop 11106, received their Gold Awards, the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive.
In addition to completing more than 100 hours of leadership, service and badge requirements, each girl wrote a business plan and completed 65 required hours on her individual Gold Award project.
Wellington addressed sustainable, or “green,” building in the Central Coast region by developing and managing an online forum titled Enviable by Design.
She is a freshman majoring in architecture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Councilwoman completes leadership training
Scotts Valley City Councilwoman Stephany Aguilar completed the Great Valley Leadership Institute, a five-day leadership course for local elected officials in California.
The course, taught by Marty Linsky of Harvard University and Saletta Boni of Columbia University, covers negotiation, decision-making, ethics, coalition-building and other topics.
Soprano to sing at Pebble Beach
Former San Lorenzo Valley resident Karen Carlisle-Neal will perform at 3 p.m. Oct. 25 during “Wine, Women and Song: A Collection of Art Songs by Women Composers” at the Church in the Forest at Stevenson School, on Forest Lake Road in Pebble Beach.
Suggested admission is $20.
Carlisle-Neal, a soprano, performs as a soloist and ensemble singer. She most recently performed as a guest soloist with the Dallas Brass at the United States Embassy in Moscow and in Märknerkirchen, Germany.
Carlisle-Neal is a 1987 San Lorenzo Valley High graduate.
