For the past three years, Penny Golding’s Ben Lomond hair salon has celebrated Veterans Day by offering a haircut to those serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
However, since this year’s Veterans Day fell on a Sunday — Golding’s day off from the Hair Frenzy salon — she decided to change up her personal way of thanking veterans for their service.
Veterans can drop by Hair Frenzy throughout the entire month of November to receive a free haircut.
Golding, who has lived and worked in Ben Lomond since relocating from Florida three years ago, said she has offered Veterans Day haircuts for many years.
“This is the first time I’ve done it for the whole month,” she said. “Until now, (Veterans Day) always fell on a day I worked.”
Golding said the haircuts tend to be popular with veterans, though she often has to repeatedly refuse payment from them.
“I have to fight with them,” she said with a laugh. “They deserve that, at least.”
For Ben Lomond resident Dennis Lewicki, a Veterans Day haircut appointment with Golding has become an annual tradition.
Lewicki, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1976, said Golding is an usher at his church and that he looks forward to his visit.
“She’s a real good friend,” he said. “She gives you a great cut.”
Golding said that she tries to find ways to help people in her community.
“It’s like helping the community — I love doing things every month for somebody,” she said. “People helping people — that’s what I like.”
