Scotts Valley High senior Danica Kelley took first in the 135-pound weight class bracket at the Central Coast Section Girls Southern Regional Tournament at Watsonville High on Feb. 10.

The top eight wrestlers in each of the 14 weight divisions advanced to the CCS Masters Tournament, also at Watsonville High, on Saturday starting at 9am.

Falcons senior Kayce Martinovsky (140-pounds) took second, while fellow teammate sophomore Citlali Lopez (110) placed 10th, failing to advance to the Masters tourney.

Kelley—who finished 4-0 with four pins—pinned Alisal High senior Joselin Hernandez in 2:59 in the final.

Martinovsky was pinned by Monterey High junior Ella Myers in 56 seconds in the final. Martinovsky finished 3-1 with a pair of pins.

Alisal won the team title with a score of 280.0 points, followed by Gilroy High (255.5) in second and Monterey (223.0) took third.

Scotts Valley (75.0) was the top team from Santa Cruz County, placing ninth in the 45-team regionals tournament.

Boys’ Wrestling

Scotts Valley sophomore Angelo Vignato (126) and SLV freshman Gabriel Attia (215) each took sixth in their respective weight classes at the CCS Boys Southern Regional Tournament at Watsonville High on Feb. 10.

Both wrestlers advanced to this weekend’s Masters Tournament, which will also take place at Watsonville High at 9am.

SLV senior Logan Hede (165), junior Grady Cloyd (175) and sophomore Ollin Bates (190) each took fifth place in their weight classes. The Cougars trio advanced to this weekend’s championships.

SLV sophomore Andrew Gafford (285) took 10th and failed to advance. 

Gilroy won the 48-team event with a score of 505.0 points, followed by Hollister High (230.0) in second and Alisal (146.0) took third. SLV (79.0) tied for 11th.

Boys’ Basketball

Santa Cruz 88, Scotts Valley 51: Taylor Knox had 12 points for the Falcons in a loss to the top seed Cardinals in the SCCAL Tournament semifinals Feb. 8.

Chase Welle along with the Shilling twins—Will and Zach each finished with 10 points for Scotts Valley.

The Falcons ended the regular season with a 12-14 overall record and placed fourth in the SCCAL standings with a 5-5 record in league play.  

Scotts Valley 70, San Lorenzo Valley 68: Junior guard Will Shilling had a team-best 18 points for the Falcons as they edged the Cougars in the opening round of the SCCAL Tournament on Feb. 6.

Fellow teammate Taylor Knox had 16 points including three 3-pointers. Kit DeForest and Chase Welle each finished with 12 points for Scotts Valley.

SLV was led by Noah Steiger with 18 points. Other contributors included Jacob Sanders with 16 points, Dominic Chiechi had 12 and Aiden Nounnan added 11 for the Cougars.

SLV finished the regular season with a 10-17 overall record and placed tied for fifth in the SCCAL standings with a 1-9 record in league play.

Girls’ Basketball

Scotts Valley 57, Harbor 27: Sophomore guard Brooklyn Williams had a game-best 24 points for the Falcons who beat the Pirates in the first round of the SCCAL Tournament on Feb. 6.  

Fellow teammate Hanna Shehorn finished with 14 points and Samantha Rebbert contributed eight for Scotts Valley.

The Falcons finished the regular season with an 11-15 overall record and placed third in the SCCAL standings with a 6-4 record in league play.

Boys’ Soccer

SLV 2, Soquel 2: Aiden Nounnan recorded one goal and an assist for the Cougars in a draw with the Knights in SCCAL action on Feb. 12.

Nounnan was credited with an assist on Owen Garrahan’s game-tying goal in the 70th minute for SLV (5-7-1, 3-5-1), which will host newly crowned league champion Aptos (13-3-2, 7-1-1) in the teams’ regular-season finale on Wednesday at 3:30pm.

Girls’ Soccer

Scotts Valley 2, SLV 0: Ella Ireland notched a pair of goals for the Falcons in their shutout win against the Cougars in SCCAL action on Feb. 6. 

Taylor Ericson was credited with one assist for Scotts Valley, which finished the regular season with a 9-7-1 overall record and placed third in the SCCAL standings with a 6-4 record in league play.

SLV finished with a 5-9-3 overall record and placed sixth in the league standings with an 0-8-2 record in league play.
