Scotts Valley High School placed 32 of 76 teams in the prestigious Coast Classic wrestling tournament Dec. 27 and 28 at Aptos High School and several local wrestlers from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high schools placed in the top 12 in their weight class.
The highly-competitive tournament featured four of the top 10 ranked teams in California.
For Scotts Valley Doug Peyser, wrestling at 170 pounds, went 4-2 and placed in the top 12. Also for the Falcons Baldan Dashiev at 195 pounds went 3-1 and finished in the top 12.
For SLV, sophomore Jed Kraft, wrestling at 138 pounds finished in the top 12.
SLV sent two other wrestlers, junior Eli Reyes went 1-2 at 126 pounds in his first year wrestling, and sophomore Jason Silva lost in the fourth round of consolations at 113 pounds.
For the Falcons, Thor Oglesby was 0-2 wrestling at 106 pounds, Domino Parrish was 3-2 at 120 pounds, Michael Sandoval was 1-2, wrestling at 132 pounds, Nick Reyes was 2-2 at 138 pounds, Andy Ramirez was 1-2 at 160 pounds, Tristan Leonetti was 0-2 at 160 pounds and Frankie Graves was 0-2 at 182 pounds.
Scotts Valley’s varsity team will compete at the Mat Classic at Granada High School on Saturday, Jan. 4 before opening the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season on January 15 against SLV at Soquel High School.
The Cougars will wrestle at the Apple Cider Tournament at Watsonville High School on January 11 before opening league against the Falcons on January 15.
