This spring, a dream will come true for local third-grader Hunter Reynolds
The 8-year-old has been invited to compete for the AMA National Amateur Arenacross Championship title in the 65cc motorcycle class May 7 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
Reynolds leaves San Lorenzo Elementary School twice a week to practice on his 65cc Cobra at the 408mx motocross track in San Jose.
His father, Brian, bought his son his first Honda 50cc when he was 4, and from then on, the family adjusted to regular weekend trips to the Salinas Posse grounds as he plunged into racing motorcycles.
“It was just so fun to do,” Hunter’s mother, Misty, said. “We loved giving him the experience on his little 50, and he loved racing.”
This year Reynolds took part in a race series that took him all over the state. He has raced on tracks including Chico, Marysville, Dixon and Livermore.
As an 8-year-old, Reynolds is one of five boys — and the youngest by two years — competing in the West Region. Nationwide, he is one of only 20 boys in the 65cc class, ages 7 through 11, to earn an invitation to the final race.
The championship in Las Vegas, in conjunction with Monster Energy AMA Supercross, will also host the world’s best riders in all of supercross as they race for the Supercross World Championship.
