After the ninth summer of the Music at Skypark concert series, Kiwanis of the Valleys was able to give $16,000 to music education in Scotts Valley.
The three concerts — July 27, Aug. 31 and Sept. 28 — were free to attend but sponsors, attendees, vendors and the bands themselves all donated to fund music programs in Scotts Valley public schools. On Nov. 8, the club gave Scotts Valley Unified School District a check for $16,000 — which amounts to a total of $145,000 over the last nine years of performances and donations.
“The high school had no proper instruments, seating, storage cabinets or much of an infrastructure for band. The Kiwanis funds have been our only funding and have helped purchase much of the equipment needed for band and choir programs to function. With Kiwanis funding we have been able to offer our students a quality music education. We never could have come this far so fast without the Kiwanis funding,” music teacher Beth Hollenbeck said following the award.
Kiwanis of the Valleys thanked the bands who performed during Music at Skypark and the generosity of the volunteers, Circle K student group at U.C. Santa Cruz and businesses who helped run or sponsor the series.
