Food packaging law to take effect

Scotts Valley’s new ordinance requiring businesses to use biodegradable or recyclable containers for prepared food will go into effect June 17.
Many businesses already have switched from polystyrene foam containers, according to Scott Hamby, the city’s environmental program manager.
The City Council adopted the ordinance Dec. 17. Fines for violations ran range from $100 to $500.
“Through the elimination of polystyrene to-go packaging, we can maximize the life of our landfill, lessen the impact of litter, reduce health concerns and help to ensure the vitality of our local creeks and streams and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary,” Hamby said.
