San Lorenzo Valley High wrestler Cody Rodebaugh started his march to a second straight state title with an easy win at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League finals Thursday, Feb. 11.
Rodebaugh, the top-ranked wrestler in California at 145 pounds, defeated Scotts Valley’s Chris Youmans in the final at Scotts Valley High to clinch his fourth consecutive league title. The win qualifies him for the Central Coast Section championship Friday, Feb. 19, at Independence High in San Jose.
Cougars junior Logan Kellogg won his second consecutive league title, but at 189 pounds. Last season, Kellogg competed at 171 pounds and defeated Harbor’s Trevor Perrigo. This year, Kellogg handed John Velez of Aptos High a second-place finish.
While Rodebaugh’s high school career is coming to a close, Cougars freshman Michael Kraft won his first league title, wrestling at 103 pounds, over Scotts Valley freshman Grant Margerum.
Sophomore Ben Landauer (215 pounds) and Patrick Doran (112) each finished second and qualified for the CCS finals.
SLV took second in league, scoring 199.5 points, 50 points behind winner Aptos High, which scored 249.5 points and had five individual league champs.
Scotts Valley High qualified four wrestlers for the CCS meet. Besides Youmans and Margerum, senior Alex Salisbury (171) and junior David Nice (152) finished second in their weight divisions.
Wrestling against the boys, Scotts Valley sophomore Blair Evans (112) took third and qualified for the girls state championship.
Scotts Valley finished fifth in the SCCAL with 113.5 points.
The top two wrestlers in the CCS from each weight bracket will go on to the California State Wrestling Championships on March 5 and 6 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
