The Scotts Valley High girls basketball team finished the regular season in third place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, the best finish a Scotts Valley varsity basketball team has had.
The girls finished 18-6 overall and 7-5 in the SCCAL, including a three-game winning streak to cap the season.
The Falcons won their first-round playoff game over San Lorenzo Valley High, 59-23, behind 16 points from Liz Munger and Kelsey LaPorte.
They played Aptos High in the second round Thursday, Feb. 18, after press time.
Boys hoops fall in playoffs
The Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley High boys basketball teams both fell in the opening round of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League playoffs, ending the season for both teams.
Scotts Valley fell 94-59 to Santa Cruz High on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The Falcons finished 5-20 overall, including 0-12 in the SCCAL, in Randy Johnson’s first year as coach.
The San Lorenzo Valley boys fell in the league tournament 61-54 to Harbor High despite 15 points from Jared Payne and 13 from Blake Bechtel.
The Cougars finished 8-16 overall and 4-8 in league.
SV girls soccer plows ahead
The Scotts Valley High girls soccer team survived a scare from Santa Cruz High in a 0-0 tie Feb. 11, and then defeated San Lorenzo Valley High, 4-0, in the second-to-last game of the season to keep their league record loss-free.
The team is 9-0-2 in the SCCAL and played its final regular-season game after press time against Soquel High, whom the Falcons beat 1-0 earlier in the season.
The Falcons will compete in the Central Coast Section playoffs with games to be announced.
Bethany finishes hoops season
The Bethany University men’s basketball team capped the California Pacific Coast Conference season with a 66-64 loss to William Jessup University on Feb. 13. The Bruins, led by Jason Maples with 12.57 points per game, finished 1-10 in conference and 2-22 overall.
The women’s team played its final game of the season Thursday, Feb. 18, against Simpson University. The women were 1-10 in Cal Pac play heading into the game after beating Pacific Union College, 44-42, on Feb. 11 and falling 71-51 to William Jessup University on Feb. 13.
Rachel Eastabrook led the team with 8.17 points per game.
