Construction to install a 10-inch sewer main along Graham Hill Road between Sims Road and Treetop Drive is scheduled to be completed by March 31. The sewer main will fix a problem with a failing treatment plant that serves the Rolling Woods housing development by transporting waste directly to the Santa Cruz city wastewater plant.
Construction was originally scheduled to be completed last year, but design issues that arose because of a high-pressure gas main in the area put the project on hold for a few months, county public works officials said.
During the delay, two manholes covered with heavy-duty metal plates in the northbound lane of Graham Hill Road near Sims Road often caused motorists to swerve to avoid the speed bump-like obstacles.
“These will be removed prior to any other work,” said Geoffrey Padgett of the Santa Cruz County Public Works Department. “We know it’s been a little bit of a hassle.”
Padgett said that, pending good weather, the plates would be removed by the end of the month. However, traffic delays will remain between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. until the end of March while county crews complete the project.
