Scotts Valley Police Department will be participating in “Operation Safe Passage” from August 6-14, with the goal of increasing the safety of students commuting to and from school at the beginning of the new school year.
During “Operation Safe Passage,” extra officers will be working to strictly enforce traffic violations in and around all local school zones within the City of Scotts Valley.
Officers will focus on the following violations by both motorists as well as commuting students:
- Speeding vehicles;
- Failing to yield to pedestrians;
- Crossing outside of a crosswalk;
- Juvenile bicyclists without required helmets or not properly worn;
- Cell phone and texting violations;
- Stop sign violations; and
- Blocking intersections.
“The start of a new school year is always an exciting time for both students and parents,” said Capt. Scott Garner. “During the first few weeks, we typically see a noticeable increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as many parents choose to accompany their children to school. Operation Safe Passage is focused on ensuring the safety of everyone on the road, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike. We encourage drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time for their commutes and be especially mindful during school drop-off and pick-up hours.”
