Vine Hill bake sale raises $600 for Haiti
A bake sale hosted by Vine Hill Elementary School fifth-graders, with the help of Scotts Valley High freshmen Aaron Gouw and Ethan Hur, raised nearly $600 for Haiti relief after the January earthquake that devastated the island nation.
The school’s fifth-grade service club donated the money to Haiti through Scotts Valley Rotary in the form of first-aid boxes.
Soquel student wins Rotary speech contest
Rodrigo Plaza from Soquel High School won the annual Rotary Club Area 7 speech contest March 10 at San Lorenzo Valley High School. Contestants from the around the county spoke for five minutes on the theme “The future of Rotary is in your hands.” Sydnie Reyes from Scotts Valley High School and Haley Nolan from San Lorenzo Valley High School were the local participants in the contest.
Valley Women’s Club hosts meeting
The Valley Women’s Club had its 32nd general meeting March 14 at the Highlands Park Senior Center in Ben Lomond. Sen. Joe Simitian and county Supervisor Mark Stone spoke at the potluck dinner. The club’s leadership spoke about its plans for the revival of the June 5 Redwood Mountain Faire at Roaring Camp Railroads.
Boulder Creek businesses meet
The Boulder Creek Business Association had a networking dinner and fundraiser at Scopazzi’s Restaurant in Boulder Creek on March 13. A live auction by Leighton Keeling and Lynda Phillips and the introduction of the new board of directors by county Supervisor Mark Stone highlighted the night.
The dinner was hosted by Scopazzi’s owners Taleel Janbay and Paul Violante.
Seaman graduates from training
Navy seaman recruit Brian Oswood completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Oswood completed classroom study and instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and shipboard and aircraft safety.
He is a 2005 graduate of East Union High School in Manteca and the son of Carolyn Chew of Ben Lomond and Jerry Oswood of Tehachapi.
