SV baseball shows well in non-league play
The Scotts Valley High baseball team is 2-1 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play and 7-7 overall after a 9-2 non-league win April 6 against Pacific Grove.
Shane Carle struck out six and walked two while allowing two earned runs.
Lately, the Falcons have been tough to beat behind senior Taylor Toccalino, who has thrown two consecutive no-hitters.
Toccalino tossed seven hitless innings in a 5-0 win over Harbor on March 26. In his next start, he threw another no-hitter against Monte Vista of Cupertino in a game that ended with a 10-0 score after five innings.
The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League had no league games this week, as students took a break from classes between April 5 and 9.
The Falcons will host Gonzalez High at 3 p.m. Friday, April 9, before returning to league play Tuesday, April 13, when they will host Soquel High at 4 p.m.
Scotts Valley bocce team looks for revenge against Santa Cruz
The Scotts Valley bocce team, led by captain Steve Horlock, will play the Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department in its annual showdown April 24.
The match is scheduled for noon at Skypark, where the Scotts Valley team will look for revenge after falling to Santa Cruz in 2009. This is the third year the teams have faced off.
Scotts Valley’s team is made up of coach Rudy Cabigas, Diane May, Vince Nosse, Tom Walsh and Billy Cardoza.
SLV alumna wins steeplechase for Arkansas
Arkansas University sophomore Taylor Johnson, a 2008 San Lorenzo Valley High graduate, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Razorbacks’ track and field team at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
Johnson, running in her first college steeplechase, won the race in 10 minutes, 50.6 seconds.
“Taylor Johnson delivered more than we hoped for,” coach Lance Harter said. “I think we found her event, and now she has the initial experience she needs to improve on her race.”
Recent grad helps Sonoma State to national title
Zak Beltz, a 2009 San Lorenzo Valley High graduate, helped Sonoma State to the gold-bracket Division II volleyball national championship during his freshman season.
Beltz, a middle blocker, averaged two solo blocks per game and a .300 hitting percentage to help Sonoma to an 8-1 record in the national tournament.
Beltz broke his arm in December and missed the league season before returning for the playoffs.
Volleyball is a club team at Sonoma.
