Girls and boys from both San Lorenzo Valley High and Scotts Valley High qualified for the Central Coast Section trials with strong performances at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League finals on Saturday, May 8.
The Cougar boys (110 points) took second behind Santa Cruz High (188), and the Cougar girls were third (69.5) behind Santa Cruz (137) and Aptos (123.5).
The Scotts Valley boys, the defending league champions, finished third with 78 points, and the girls placed fourth with 69 points.
The CCS qualifiers will participate in the semifinals May 22 at Gilroy High School, and those who qualify that day will move on to the finals May 28, also at Gilroy High.
San Lorenzo Valley
For the Cougar girls, Carmen Tellez finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.27 seconds. Amanda Lackides was second in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 2½ inches. Cameron Kellogg qualified in discus by throwing 107-3 and finished second in shot put by throwing 31-6½. Sierra Clark won the shot put by throwing 34-2½.
The Cougar boys were led by Allan Hetke, who edged Aptos’ Mitch Moriarty by five-hundredths of a second in the 1,600 meter race by running a time of 4 minutes, 26.73 seconds. Hetke also finished second in the 3,200 in 9:59.35. Alejandro Torres took second in the 800 in 1:58.28, and Kyle Todd won the shot put, tossing the shot 45-04½. Todd finished second in discus with a 134-07 heave.
Scotts Valley
Kayla Germany was the lone Scotts Valley girl to qualify for the CCS meet, finishing second in the 3,200 with a time of 11:47.75.
For the boys, the 4-x-100-meter and 4-x-400-meter relay teams both qualified. Kyle McNulty won the 800 in 1:56.41; Blake Ward won the 400 in 50.66; Alex Weitzel cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault; and Alex Benko vaulted to 12 feet.
