4-H honors its own
Dorothy Chittenden-Williams was honored by the Scotts Valley 4-H Club on June 6 for her leadership and dedication to 4-H since 1999, when her daughter, Karen Williams, joined.
She became a club leader five years ago and has served as president of the 4-H county council for two years.
She started by teaching bread making and poultry projects. She also started the club’s highly successful wreath-making fundraiser.
“Dorothy is unselfish, giving, community-minded and a great team player. She always steps up to the plate when things need to be done,” said Joan Wildman, Felton 4-H leader. “She is a good neighbor and very supportive.”

Local students graduate, achieve
Scotts Valley’s Grace Gallagher was one of 472 students who graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania on May 15. Gallagher, the daughter of John and Margaret Gallagher of Scotts Valley, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and graduated magna cum laude.
Hanna Lee from Scotts Valley was one of 677 students who graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York on May 14. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design.
Peter Kent-Stoll of Ben Lomond was named to the dean’s list at the State University of New York at Geneseo this spring. He had a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester.
Teacher wins textbooks
Jeff Matlock, an eighth-grade U.S. history teacher at Scotts Valley Middle School, is one of 20 teachers in the country who will receive a free class set of 25 copies of “A People’s History of the United States” from the Zinn Education Project.
Matlock used a Zinn activity regarding the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 to help his students gain another perspective on women’s history.
The Zinn Education Project was co-founded in 2008 by historian Howard Zinn, author of “People’s History,” and two nonprofits: Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change. It encourages people to look at history from different perspectives.
Cyclists ride for diabetes research
Jerry Weingord of Scotts Valley helped Team OTC raise more than $9,000 in two weeks to support Tour de Cure, the annual American Diabetes Association cycling event.
The team raised money on behalf of Nicky Williams, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She is the daughter of team captain Shawn Williams of Santa Cruz.
The ride was Sunday, June 13, at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto.
