Highway 9 soon to be opened
Highway 9 between Felton and Santa Cruz is scheduled to reopen at the end of September, barring any major setbacks, according to Caltrans officials.
The road has been closed since June as contractor Gordon N. Ball of Alamo repaired a major slipout from 2006. The full closure was necessary to ensure safety around the large machines used to shore up the narrow roadway, Caltrans has said.
Caltans and businesses on Highway 9 in Felton posted signs on Graham Hill Road this summer noting that they are still open for business.
The original completion date for the project was early October.
SC real estate agent ‘murders’ again
Nancy Lynn Jarvis has added a third book to her Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries series with the release of “Buying Murder.” The book, set primarily in Bonny Doon and Santa Cruz County, also has scenes that take place in San Juan Bautista and Hollister.
Jarvis’ books use her 20-plus years of experience in real estate for background.
“A building inspector once discovered an empty triangle space between house walls and joked that a body could be hidden in it. There had to be a book using that premise,” Jarvis said.

VCUM announces annual flea market
Valley Churches United Mission will host its annual flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 2 in the parking lot of St. John’s Catholic Church, 5953 Highway 9, in Felton.
The market will feature holiday items and bargains. Refreshments will be served all day.
Renting a vendor space costs $20, or $35 for two spaces. Spaces must be rented in advance. All proceeds will benefit the VCUM emergency food pantry in Ben Lomond, which serves about 2,175 people a month.
