The remains of a Mexican national found in the Santa Cruz Mountains six months ago were identified using DNA from relatives.
A hiker found the skeletal remains of Jose Pablo Galvan off Highland Way on March 2.
Galvan’s death was ruled a homicide by a county medical examiner, who determined he died at least a year before his body was discovered.
Detectives have no leads as to who Galvan’s killer might be.
Galvan had lived in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and would be 23 years old if he were still alive, according to the sheriff’s office.
Some items found with his remains led detectives to contact possible relatives in Las Vegas, in L.A. and, with the help of people from the Mexican consulate, in Mexico.
Galvan was last seen by family members in Los Angeles in 2007. His purpose in traveling to Santa Cruz County has not yet been determined. It is also unknown whether he died where his body was found or elsewhere.
Detectives ask anyone with information about Galvan to call the investigations division at 454-2311, the anonymous tip line at 454-2847 or the sheriff’s 24-hour dispatch at 471-1121.
