A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 9, for Johanna “Nan” Advokaat Joesten, who died Sept. 22 in Santa Cruz from complications after hip surgery. She was 87 years old.
Mrs. Joesten was born in San Francisco to Johanna and Pleun Advokaat. She was raised in Santa Cruz and San Jose and had lived in Scotts Valley since 1976.
She graduated from San Jose State College in 1944 and worked as a secretary for more than 25 years. She retired in 1988.
Since 2004, Mrs. Joesten had volunteered most Thursdays at St. Francis Catholic Kitchen in Santa Cruz. She loved animals, and her many cats kept her company. Relatives said she also enjoyed playing bingo and cheering for the San Francisco 49ers.
Mrs. Joesten is survived by her five children, Steve Joesten, and his wife, Karen, of Los Gatos, Stephanie Lykam and Margo Gorini, and her husband, Richard, both of San Jose, Michele Bo of Mountain View and Patrice Joesten of Scotts Valley; her sister, Cornelia “Nell” Advokaat Strohmaier of Sunnyvale; 15 grandchildren; and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Joesten, in September 2008; a granddaughter; and a son-in-law.
Saturday’s funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. at San Agustin Parish, 257 Glenwood Drive, in Scotts Valley, followed immediately by a reception at the church.
