Scotts Valley Police Department officers will visit Scotts Valley Middle School and Scotts Valley High School over the next several weeks to provide bicycle, pedestrian and e-bike safety education.
The program, which has traditionally included bicycle safety, has been expanded to address the growing popularity of e-bikes. Students will learn about helmet safety, rules of the road, signaling, visibility, defensive riding, distractions, stopping distances and e-bike classifications. The program also will address the difference between legal e-bikes and electric motorcycles such as Sur-Rons.
The department is partnering with Scotts Valley Unified School District and local vendors on additional safety programs for students, parents and community members.
Planned activities include free helmets for those in need, bike rodeos, parent and community presentations, bike-light safety, maintenance education, community bike safety events and neighborhood rides led by members of the department’s Bicycle Team.
Later this year, department officers will complete specialized instructor training to expand bicycle and e-bike safety education locally.
