EDITOR,
This is addressed to Liz Bloch, who wrote about receiving a hate note in her mailbox when she proudly hung the New Zealand flag in front of her home.
I am shocked and embarrassed that such an ugly American lives in our community! Please accept an apology on behalf of everyone I know who has heard of this incident. The whole thing is appalling, and I would hope that Mrs. Bloch and her family know that it was an act of one narrow-minded individual and is not representative of the whole community.
If I knew where to get a New Zealand flag, I’d hang one on my front porch and would encourage anyone who is willing to hang one or any other flag that represents the country of their origin — unless you are an American Indian, you have parents, grandparents or great-grandparents who came to this country from elsewhere.
It doesn’t make us less of an American to feel pride in that fact — it is what makes us Americans!
Dear Bloch family, please hang your flag with pride. We are honored that you chose Scotts Valley as your new home. Please don’t judge us by the act of one sad individual.
