Felton 4-H is looking for members of its new program for Primary 4-H’ers, ages 5 to 8. This program, known nationwide as “Cloverbuds,” was created to allow young club members to learn without competition.
As a member of Felton 4-H, the largest 4-H club in Santa Cruz County, young people can participate in any of 16 projects.
Projects include: Archery, Functional Knotting, Mosaic Tile Art, Knitting, Lego Robotics, Flower Arranging, Sport Project, Rocketry, Veterinary Science, Crafts, Woodworking, Career Research, Ham Radio, Fair Booth Building, Tractor Restoration, and of course, all of the livestock projects.
Kids ages 9 to 19 are able to participate in leadership development by serving on committees, and holding positions at the club or county level.
Serving in the community
Community service is another aspect of 4-H that members participate in. The last community service project was collecting items to put in care packages for Red Cross Operation Care and Comfort.
4-H Senior members, Edee Wildman and Miriam Arghavani, helped with this project by gathering donations. After all the items were collected, 4-H members, Derek Jensen, David Jensen, Autumn Bushard, and Community Service Chairperson, Simone Bushard, took the donations to a drop-off site in San Jose.
The upcoming community service project is decorating cookie bags, senior boxes, and baking cookies for the Valley Churches United Missions Christmas Project.
In January, 4-Hers will hold a “Treasures for the Homeless Scavenger Hunt” for those less fortunate at the Rowland and Pat Rebele Family Shelter. They will be asking for donations from their family, neighbors, and friends, for the homeless in Santa Cruz.
The County Fair
The Santa Cruz County Fair is both an event and an opportunity for members to earn ribbons and awards for their project work. Many Felton 4-Hers won high awards during September’s fair.
Mercedes Malloy won 1st and a Special Award for her whale painting; Michael Kraft won 1st and Best of Section for his money clip; David Jensen won 1st and a Special Award for his decorated knife sheath; Simone Bushard won 1st and a Special Award for her hexagon-shaped hardwood cutting board; and Katherine McCormick, 9, won 3rd Place for her outstanding flower arrangement.
