Folks hoping to enjoy the Scotts Valley Senior Center need look no further than Lori Barone, who recently started her new job as senior recreation coordinator with Scotts Valley’s recreation department.
Barone, a 32-year Boulder Creek resident and grandmother of three, first applied for the position when she spotted the job listing in July. After a panel interview, she initially was not offered the job.
But two days before Thanksgiving, her phone rang to offer her an early holiday gift.
She officially began in her new capacity Dec. 7, the same day as her last class at Cabrillo College, and her son’s 35th birthday.
“It is very difficult for anyone to find a job right now — and it doesn’t help being older,” Barone said. “Finding a city job … I feel like I won a lottery.”
Barone took over the reins at the senior center from Zibe Karo, who helped with her training.
For Barone, 58, the job — recently reduced in hours as the city tries to save money to balance its budget — includes arranging meetings, managing accounts and deposits, driving the center’s van and leading Meals on Wheels.
“It’s a 40-hour-a-week job that has been cut down to 20 hours a week — so I’ve got to sit down and figure out what part is most important and needs to get done the most,” Barone said.
“Most of all, my main duty is to make every senior that comes in feel welcome,” she added.
Barone said she was excited to work for her community and felt welcomed by the people who use the center and by city staff alike.
“I see the seniors come in, have a cup of coffee, a piece of cake, and see their friends, and their faces just light up,” Barone said. “The senior center is not my center — it belongs to the seniors. I am there for them.”
