Tsunami Swim Club team member Linnea Byrd put in extra pool time last week in preparation for the Junior Olympic Trials and Finals Meet held at San Ramon Valley Livermore Aquatics March 18-20.
Swimmers from across the state and elsewhere who earned Junior Olympic times in sanctioned swim meets throughout the year were invited to compete.
Vine Hill Elementary School fifth grader Byrd was the only Scotts Valley Tsunami Swim Club member to qualify for this elite Junior Olympics.
“I love swimming with everyone on the Tsunami,” said Byrd. “Swimming in the Junior Olympics was an honor, but I have more fun swimming with my friends at Club One than competing.”
Byrd competed in freestyle and backstroke events at the Junior Olympics.
Tsunami Coach Pam Leonard has had two other swimmers – Lauren Wood and Aria Leonard – qualify for the Junior Olympics in past years. Tsunami is the only competitive swim club in Scotts Valley.
“Coaching swimmers like Linnea is a dream come true,” said Coach Leonard. “She is the most positive, enthusiastic, ‘go getter’ athlete imaginable. She, like many others on her team, exemplifies how hard work and desire to be the best pays off. Our swim team will always shine with swimmers like Linnea and I’m proud of them all.”
