Scotts Valley Rock and Landscape Supply, better known as the Rockery, will shut its doors at the end of the month.
Until then, owners Ron and Sandi Kilcrease are unloading the rest of their stock, from bricks and gravel to equipment and trucks, for half price. The couple will retire from the business.
“I turned 66 in March,” Ron Kilcrease said. “I talked to the property owner and asked if she wanted to take it over, and she said no.”
The Kilcreases purchased the landscape supply business, founded in 1968, 15 years ago. Several years later, they sold their other business, Owens Rental, an equipment rental shop in Scotts Valley, to focus exclusively on landscape supply. During that time, they served customers almost entirely in Santa Cruz County.
“We’re really going to miss the customers, the people,” Ron Kilcrease said. “It’s been rewarding. We really like it.”
Topsoil and untreated sawdust were customer favorites, he said. He added, though, that the shop had lowered its prices the past three years, following Central Home Supply’s move from Santa Cruz to Scotts Valley and as a concession to a slow economy.
“The last three years, business has been down,” he noted.
The couple lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains and plans to stay in the area and enjoy retired life. When asked what she looked forward to most in retirement, Sandi Kilcrease replied, “Weekends off.”
