Band performs in Henry Cowell
The San Lorenzo Valley Community Band performed a concert in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt’s 1903 visit to the Big Trees Grove on May 21.
Directed by John Christian, the band performed tunes of the time, including compositions by Scotts Joplin, Gershwin and W.C. Handy, among others. A healthy crowd enjoyed the music in the park, some dressed in clothing from the turn of the century.

Fireworks volunteers needed
Volunteers are still needed to help with the July 4 Fireworks Spectacular at Skypark.
The Scotts Valley Advocates seek volunteers for two shifts, the first from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the second from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. Volunteers get free admission and dinner.
All proceeds from the event, sponsored by Easton Bell Sports and Scotts Valley Market, will support Scotts Valley parks.

Seagate grant buys rescue equipment
A $10,000 grant from Seagate Technology has paid for rescue equipment for the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District. The grant will go toward a Hurst hydraulic spreader (also known as the Jaws of Life) and Paratech heavy-lift Kevlar airbags.
The equipment, according to engineer paramedic Chris Stubendorff, will help in rescue situations, as cars have become “tougher” as vehicle manufacturers use stronger alloys in construction.
The new spreader has nearly triple the power now used by fire crews, and the airbags can lift as much as 20 tons.
Open auditions continue
Scotts Valley Performing Arts has extended open auditions for its summer performance of “Annie Get Your Gun.”
The auditions were overbooked last weekend and will continue from 6 to 9 p.m. June 3 and 9 a.m. to noon June 4. Callbacks are from noon to 6 p.m. June 4, all at the Bethany University Theater, 800 Bethany Drive, in Scotts Valley.
Those auditioning should prepare a 32-bar selection not from the show, including sheet music. A monologue is requested but not required.

Food drive collects nearly 3,000 pounds
Postal workers collected 2,907 pounds of food during the 19th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive put on by Valley Churches United Missions on Saturday, May 14.
The food collected in Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, Felton and Mount Hermon will be distributed by Valley Churches in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley.
According the nonprofit, volunteers John Smith, John Kennedy, Mike Davitt and Al Frischman were instrumental in getting barrels out and collecting the food.
Throughout 2011, donations have been down dramatically, as food and gas prices have risen, and an increase in pantry visits is expected as children are no longer able to receive free or low-cost lunches at school.
“With distribution five days a week, VCUM is facing a week-to-week crisis of attempting to keep up with the need,” operations director Linda Lovelace said.
