The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the winners of its annual community awards with a dance gala next month.
The Black Ties and Red Roses Dance Gala will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Hilton Scotts Valley. The night will include hors d’oeuvres and desserts, live and silent auctions, presentations and dancing to a live band.

Donna Lind: Woman of the Year
Lind, vice mayor of Scotts Valley, will be honored for her career with the Scotts Valley Police Department, her role as Fallen Officer Foundation president and her volunteer work and outreach for senior citizens. She is facilitator of a woman’s support group that helps women all over the nation. Lind also has been active on her church council and serves as vice president of the Scotts Valley Chamber Ambassadors. According to the chamber, she is known for continually stepping forward to assist local service organizations and being part of the community.
Tyler Marshall: Sharemi Ullestad Memorial Youth of the Year
Marshall is a senior at Scotts Valley High School, where he maintains a 4.2 GPA. He is a three-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball and golf, and is a captain of the varsity football team this year. He has been active in student government and served as the associated students rally officer.
Marshall is also an umpire in Scotts Valley leagues and has logged more than 200 hours in the Dominican Hospital Junior Volunteer Program. He aspires to become a medical doctor and officer through the Naval ROTC program.
Don Dumller: Man of the Year
Dumller has worked behind the scenes for many years in support of many causes in the Scotts Valley community. As owner of Leo’s U-Save Liquors, Dumller negotiates with distributors to support local service clubs in their fundraising, including the Fallen Officer Foundation, local schools, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, Cops and Rodders and Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce events.
He works with the police department to discourage drinking among teenagers and has been a repeat recipient of the Responsible Merchant Award. He also has volunteered to help the American Diabetes Association.
Scotts Valley Market: Business of the Year
The market assists with raising money for schools, Valley Churches United Missions, Scotts Valley Police Department’s D.A.R.E. program and many service groups by providing food and goods at charitable events. The store has donated child identification kits to the police department and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. It recently helped with a major fundraiser dinner for a local sheriff’s deputy with a terminal illness. Where there is a community event, Scotts Valley Market staff often donates food or makes it available at low cost.
Friends of Scotts Valley Library: Organization of the Year
The new library branch in Scotts Valley is in large part the product of the inspiration and hard work of the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library, chamber leaders said. The building includes extra touches paid for by the Friends, such as the media wall, fireplace, solar tubes throughout the building, flowers and artwork. Members also donate time to sort books for sale and regularly volunteer to help library staff. In just over three years, the group has raised more than $220,000, all of which has gone into the library and the community.
Interact Clubs of Scotts Valley middle and high schools: Beautification Project of the Year
With the support of the Rotary Club of Scotts Valley, the SVHS and SVMS Interact Clubs completed beach cleanups, created a mural in honor of late custodian Daniel Garcia and planted trees at the high school. Terra Bella Landscaping consulted with the clubs and the school district to provide a comprehensive plan for the quad area of the high school, and club members dug holes big enough for 25-gallon trees.
