School is right around the corner, and Valley Churches United Missions knows that having new school supplies can help start a student’s year on the right track.
“It’s important that all students are prepared for their lessons and have the proper tools to complete their homework assignments,” said Linda Lovelace, director of the charity.
The organization is launching its annual back-to-school campaign, which helps provide local students with school supplies.
VCUM asks for donations from the community in the form of either purchased supplies or money.
The 2008 drive provided 315 students with supplies, with 100 percent of the donations going to students.
For each $40 collected, a student will be provided with a backpack full of school necessities like notebooks, pens and pencils, art supplies, erasers, rulers, calculators and other gear, as well as a gift certificate for a pair of new shoes.
The VCUM supply drive will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Felton New Leaf Market, 6240 Highway 9, and at Place Art & Office Supply, 1501 41st Ave., in Capitola.
New supplies may also be dropped off at the Valley Churches office Monday through Thursday at the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce or at the Ben Lomond gas station any time of the week.
Monetary gifts may also be mailed to VCUM, P.O. Box 367, Ben Lomond 95005.
