Mixed martial arts event on tap
The Showdown in Surftown 3, a mixed martial arts competition, will take place at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The event is the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts state championship finals and will feature 18 of the top-ranked fighters in northern and southern California.
Fighters will compete in nine weight classes, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight for the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization State title belt.
Doors open for the event at 5 p.m. and fights begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door with a portion to benefit the Black Sheep Redemption Program.

Santa Cruz Warriors start season
The Santa Cruz Warriors NBA Development League basketball team will open the regular season with a home game at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22 at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz.
