Wrestlers from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley High Schools will grapple at the Central Coast Section Championships this weekend after a strong showing at the league finals last week.
The Falcons took second of six teams in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League finals on Friday, Feb. 21 and three wrestlers won league titles at their weight class. San Lorenzo Valley finished third and had two wrestler capture titles.
The top three wrestlers at each weight class qualified for the CCS Tournament.
At the league finals held at Harbor High School, Doug Peyser won two matches to win the title at 173 pounds; Frankie Graves, at 195 pounds, pinned his first opponent and defeated his second 4-3 to capture the title; and Nick Reyes, wrestling at 138 pounds took first with 23-7 and 8-2 victories in his two matches.
The Falcons had several second and third place finishers, too.
Domino Parrish was second at 120 pounds, Andy Ramirez took second at 160, Baldan Dashiev was second at 182 pounds, Thor Ogelsby was third at 103 pounds, Michael Sandoval was third at 126 pounds, Josh Blum was third at 134 pounds, Sean Stiles was third at 220 pounds and Casey Gombos was third in the heavyweight division.
For the Cougars, Jason Silva, wrestling at 115 pounds pinned his final opponent to win the championship, and Jed Kraft won a high-scoring final match to win the title at 128 pounds. Other SLV wrestlers to qualify for CCS were Zephyr Frazer who took third at 147 pounds, Sotero Toralta who took third at 154 pounds and Pat Brooks who took third at 172 pounds.
Both teams will send wrestlers to the CCS Tournament which spans two days, Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at Independence High School in San Jose.
