The Scotts Valley High School varsity softball team looks to finish among the best in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League for a second straight year.
In 2013 the Falcons finished 20-9 overall and earned a berth to the Central Coast Section playoffs, after completing the SCCAL 10-2, the best record in school history.
This year the Falcons hope to achieve a similar goal.
The team suits up one senior, captain Serena Tapuloa, four juniors, four sophomores, and eight freshman.
“Our senior has stepped up to be a big leader,” Scotts Valley head coach Lisa Rasmussen said.
After having to cancel numerous games due to field conditions at the Scotts Valley High School, the team’s current record is 4-3 overall.
“Some of these teams we’re playing against have played together for a couple of weeks. We’re still trying to piece some things together,” Rasmussen said. “But the team chemistry is coming along good.”
The team is currently 0-2 in the SCCAL, with a loss to Soquel and San Lorenzo Valley.
“We’re still trying to learn how to play with each other at the varsity level,” junior captain Sarah Reyes said. “Each game we get better and better.”
Senior Serena Tapuloa notices similar characteristics. “We have a lot of potential,” she said. “We just have to find our rhythm.”
The Falcons played Stevenson High, Saratoga High and Harbor High this week after press time.
After spring break, Scotts Valley will play Aptos High School at home on Tues., April 8.
