Gregory Wayne Gunn of Lompico was denied parole during a hearing at Folsom State Prison last week.
Gunn was convicted in 1991 of the second-degree murder of John Ratliff in Felton on June 20, 1990.
According to prosecutors at the time, Gunn broke into Ratliff’s house and brutally beat him to death with five different weapons. He was caught when he returned, drunk, to the crime scene with blood on his clothing while deputies investigated the crime.
Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Bill Atkinson argued at the Oct. 12 hearing that Gunn was unsuitable for parole and still poses a substantial threat to society if he were released. The parole board agreed, citing in its decision Gunn’s lack of remorse about the crime, his continued history of violence and substance abuse while incarcerated and his failure to participate in counseling or self-help services.
Gunn will not be eligible for another parole hearing for 15 years.
