El Niño storms got you scared? Then get prepared!

Around the community, what you hear is “El Niño is coming.” Like a dark hooded monster looming up from behind, the specter of flooding and property damage is daunting. Popping up to combat the threat is a variety of Preparedness Workshops.
On November 21, the City of Santa Cruz held a free El Niño Storm Preparedness Workshop that hosted several agencies who taught residents how to prepare their families and properties for heavy rains. On December 8, the City of Scotts Valley’s emergency responder teams were available to answer questions from residents about how to prepare for the expected floods and other storm related problems. They also compiled a listing of local agencies and companies who can provide the resources needed to be prepared.
On December 17, another opportunity to have questions answered about the potential strength of this year’s El Niño’s cycle will occur at the Winter Storm Preparedness and Response discussion to be held at the Felton Fire Station, 131 Kirby Street, Felton, between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Liz Taylor-Selling, President of the San Lorenzo Valley Emergency Network, said, “This is another opportunity for the general public to become better informed about what to do to prepare for this winter, and how to respond when, and if, the expected storms arrive.”
Liz encourages residents to participate by asking local emergency responders what they can do to protect family and property in the event that the storms occur. Speakers from the Felton Fire, San Lorenzo Valley Emergency Network, and the San Lorenzo Valley Community Emergency Response Team, will be present to answer questions. “If the expected storms arrive, you will be prepared,” said Liz.
