If you go to the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce website, scottsvalleychamber.com, look under Scotts Valley, scroll down to the bottom and click on Historical Society, you will see a wonderful history of the Scott House. The history was written by Jan Bowman in 1977 as part of an unpublished Master’s thesis at San JoseUniversity.
Hiram Scott bought the 4436+ acre San Augustin Rancho on September 9, 1850. The family home was built in 1853 on the old Santa Cruz County Road in the New England style since the Scott family originally came by sea from Maine to California. The house stayed in the family until 1872 when it was sold to Nahum E. Young and later to subsequent owners.
A Mr. & Mrs. Claussenius occupied the house from 1912 and Mrs. Marcie Claussenius, widow, lived there until 1968. Many other tenants lived in the old house. In 1936 the house had to be moved to a site west one hundred yards up the hill because of the widening of the Santa Cruz-Los Gatos highway, later called California Highway 17 and now Scotts Valley Drive.
In the 1970’s.it was bought by the City of Scotts Valley and moved to the grounds of the City Hall buildings and MacDorsaPark. In the 1980’s it was remodeled and city funds have been used to pay for much-needed improvements and upgrades such as wood/termite repair, new paint, alarm system and outside security lighting, and a new roof. Local residents and businesses, such as Knox Roofing, have donated funds, time and materials for the upgrades.
