The Santa Cruz CHP offers a free class to senior drivers called Age Well, Drive Smart.

During the week of December 8 which was “Older Driver Safety Awareness Week,” the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released its newest research on this topic. The advanced automotive technologies which can keep older drivers safe on the road are:
Forward collision warning/mitigation warns drivers of potential crashes or automatically applies the brakes.
Automatic crash notification allows quicker Emergency Medical Technician response and care to older drivers.
Park assist with rearview display includes backup cameras and obstacle-detection warning systems.
Parking assist with cross-traffic warning utilizes radar sensor technology to notify drivers of crossing vehicles when backing out of a parking space. On some vehicles, it automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision.
Semi-autonomous parking assistance takes over steering while moving into a parallel parking space.
Navigation assistance with GPS system can provide older drivers with feelings of increased confidence and allow them to remain focused on the road.
AAA has an updated booklet called “Smart Features for Older Drivers” which lists 2015 makes and models of automobiles having these features. Their website has lots of valuable information. Go to http://seniordriving.aaa.com/.
