News Briefs: New-law contest extended

Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, extended the deadline for the ninth annual There Oughta Be a Law contest to Nov. 15.
The contest invites Californians to submit ideas for state legislation. The winner of the contest will lunch with Simitian, have the winning ideas introduced as legislation, and have a chance to testify at a hearing on the resulting bill at the state Capitol.

No warrant in football cash case
Citing insufficient evidence, the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s office did not grant the Scotts Valley Police a warrant to arrest a suspect in the case of more than $25,000 in cash and checks stolen from the Scotts Valley office of Harbor High School football coach Travis Rebbert in August.
The department conducted a “very thorough” investigation, said Lt. John Wilson, and gathered as much evidence as possible before submitting its case to the district attorney’s office for review in September.
“We do our job the best we possibly can,” Wilson said. “If (those at the district attorney’s office) think they can go forward with the case, they go forward with it.”
For now, the investigation is closed. If any new information turns up, Wilson said, the investigation will continue.
Auditions open for post-Christmas comedy
Auditions for “The After-Christmas Carol: A Comedy of Errors” will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, in the upper room at St. Lawrence Orthodox Christian Church, 6184 Highway 9, in Felton. Actors ages 16 through 80 are welcome.
Proceeds from the play, which will be performed at San Lorenzo Valley High School in late January, will help disabled young adults through the Assisted Living Project in Scotts Valley.

Calling all Eagle Scouts
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, the Monterey Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts of America will host an Anniversary Gala and Eagle Recognition Dinner on Feb. 20.
The Monterey Council is looking for Eagle Scouts from neighboring counties, including Santa Cruz County, to attend the dinner. Scouts are invited to register online.
