Bluzar Blue is looking for a band.
Well, sort of.
The Boulder Creek musician-turned-playwright seeks four aspiring young musicians to play cast members in his rock-musical, “The Gyromantics,” depicting a garage band that almost makes it to the top.
“They’ve gotta be able to act like 17-year-olds in 1967,” Blue said.
Blue has pitched his play to Ben Lomond’s Mountain Community Theater, which is interested in picking it up if — and only if — Blue can first find the actors and actresses who will drive the show.
The play calls for 11 parts and a handful of extras, but Blue must find the four leads — two guitarists, a bass player and a drummer — by the end of the year, or the show will be scrapped.
“They’re going to make the songs, and they’re going to make the characters,” Blue said of his leads.
The play follows the band through the bar and club scene, recording in the studio and the trials of trying to make it big in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“How many people my age were in a garage band?” Blue asks. “This is about you.”
The play represents an opportunity for the aspiring musicians. The band will go into the studio and record the original songs from the play written by Blue and a friend.
“They walk away with the masters,” Blue said. “And if they get along together, they could continue on as a band.”
Blue said rehearsals for the show will be in March and April, followed by 10 weekend performances in May at Park Hall in Ben Lomond.
“We’re going to make Park Hall into the 1960s,” Blue said. “We’re going to get as much ’60s paraphernalia and posters as we can.”
The music, described as “Beatles-esque,” was crafted by Blue, now 56, who has been a musician for nearly 50 years. Everyone involved will do so as a volunteer, including Blue, and proceeds from the show will benefit Mountain Community Theater.
“This is an opportunity to get on stage, learn about it and take the next step up,” Blue said. “It’s a wide-open door.”
