James Arthur Pierce died of heart failure at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz on Thanksgiving morning. He was 76.
Mr. Pierce was born April 19, 1933, in Salamanca, N.Y., and lived in Brookdale more than 35 years. Friends described him as a gentleman who prided himself on his gift of conversation and knew how to make others laugh.
He and his friend Ray, known together as the Brookdale Boys, were warmly welcomed at their favorite restaurants in Santa Cruz and the San Lorenzo Valley. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at community functions. He was an animal lover, artistic and slightly zany, friends said.
Mr. Pierce is survived by his daughter, Amy Pierce; and three grandchildren.
At his request, no funeral is planned, and the scattering of his ashes will be private. Santa Cruz Memorial is handling arrangements.
