The PeeWee Falcon football team made history last weekend by winning the first Police Athletic League Championship in Scotts Valley.
The Falcons, led by head coach Jim Danels, defeated the Hayward Lancers, 26-18, on Saturday, Dec. 5, at PAL Stadium in San Jose.
The team won all three games in the playoffs to win the championship.
The Falcons fell behind after the first kickoff return, but they quickly recovered with a rushing touchdown from running back Ashtyn Davis, which was followed by a 2-point conversion from kicker Christy Trotter.
The Falcons fell behind for the second time after another Lancer kickoff return went for a touchdown.
But again, the Falcons rallied with a hitch-and-pitch toss from running back Trevor Alvarez to Davis, who scored his second rushing touchdown, with Trotter nailing a second 2-point conversion.
During the second quarter, Alvarez’s blocked punt resulted in a safety by Jimmy Danels, Tristan Leonetti and Devin Snelgrove, which tied the game 18-18. The Lancers tried several times to throw long passes downfield to available receivers, only to be deflected by Dawson Danner.
With only four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Falcon offense, led by Dalton Locke, Snelgrove, Ian Wenger, Collin Whitworth and Tanner Spence, steamrolled the Lancer defense for 75 yards.
Seth Fletcher punched through the line with only 14 seconds left for what would be the winning touchdown, and Trotter followed it with a final 2-point conversion.
Timothy Wagner iced the game with an interception to seal the championship.
The Falcons finished with a 10-1 record for the season, as the offense — with quarterback Nick Reyes at the helm — averaged 30 points per game, and the defense allowed an average of just five points per contest.
