Vehicle plows into Felton Feed

Two women—a 65-year-old Felton resident and a 35-year-old from Ben Lomond—sustained minor injuries when a car slammed into Felton Feed & Pet Supply on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Ben Lomond man driving the blue BMW 3 series was uninjured in the crash, which occurred just before 4pm along Highway 9 near Kirby Street, authorities said.

“A mist of broken glass shot out of the store,” said Boulder Creek resident Cory Robie, 36, who saw the crash from the Felton Community Deck.

Multiple witnesses said the first thing the driver said after impact was that he’d just received a coronavirus vaccine shot minutes earlier. CHP officer Sam Courtney, with the Santa Cruz office, told the Press Banner the driver reported he’d blacked out while driving.

Drugs and alcohol were determined not to be a factor in the crash, Courtney said, adding investigators are not looking into a car defect as a possible explanation.

The driver was not arrested, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

After firefighters cut power to the car and the building, they worked to stabilize a load-bearing column that was taken out in the crash, said Felton Fire Protection District Cpt. Ian Jones.

“The building sustained some damage to this awning right here,” he said, Sunday around 4:45pm, pointing to a severed wooden beam. “That’s kind of our main concern.”
