A fire that broke out in a cabin at a construction company yard about a mile north of Ben Lomond on Tuesday spread to vehicles and storage containers on the property and left a man with serious burns, authorities said.
A Ben Lomond Fire Protection District official said they got the call at 9:48pm. When crews arrived on the scene, at 10090 Highway 9, they found heavy smoke and fire and requested additional support.
“The fire was located in the cabin and had extended into vegetation at the rear and the vehicles to the front,” said Mike Ayers, the assistant chief, noting adjacent cargo containers were also burning. “The area of origin appears to be at the rear of the cabin on the interior.”
The man who was living in the cabin suffered burns to 18% of his body, including on his arms, torso and possibly even his airways, authorities said. He was taken to a trauma center by Stanford Life Flight.
The cabin was significantly impacted by the fire, as were three vehicles. The contents of multiple containers also received major heat and smoke damage.
Scotts Valley Fire District officials said their firefighters were on scene until about 2am.
The cause is still under investigation, but an initial investigation points to an accident.
