A presentation called “What’s Shaking Santa Cruz County?” is set for Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1pm at the Boulder Creek Public Library.

Led by speaker Poppageno, the short talk will discuss the geology of Santa Cruz County. Find out where it came from and where it might go.

Daytime closure of Highway 9 to begin Monday

Extensive winter prep work will result in a week-long daytime closure of Highway 9 beginning Monday.

Highway 9 will be closed in both directions from Paradise Park (Post Mile 1.25) to Glengarry Road (PM 4.75), from 7am-4pm, starting Monday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 6.

A detour is available on Graham Hill Road. Travelers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Because of its mountainous and forested nature, this section of Highway 9 is susceptible to closure during storms. This winter prep work will clean ditches, remove dead trees and clear culverts in order to prevent and reduce closures of the road during winter storm events.

Message and directional signs have been placed to alert travelers in advance of the project area. Emergency vehicles will have access through the project area, with some potential delays when felled trees are across the roadway.

Speakers to discuss Measure W, emergency preparedness

Guest speakers for the Democratic Club of North Santa Cruz County’s Tuesday, Oct. 3, meeting will discuss fire safety and community emergency preparedness efforts.

Mark Correira, Scotts Valley’s new fire chief, will provide information on Measure W, the Nov. 7 ballot measure for construction of a new fire station to meet seismic standards and building codes and improve District coverage and response times.

Liz Taylor-Selling, SLV Emergency Network, will talk about emergency preparedness efforts of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the work volunteer team members do to keep SLV mountain communities safe.

Club meetings are held upstairs at Bruno’s Bar and Grill, located at 230 Mt. Hermon Road in the Kings Village Shopping Center in Scotts Valley. Meetings start at 6:30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
