Highway 35 near Bear Creek Road reopens to through traffic

Highway 35 near Bear Creek Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains has reopened under one-way reversing traffic control as of Dec. 1.

Since reopening, this location is now subject to one-way reversing traffic control by means of a temporary signal over the next few months. Caltrans crews will continue with additional repair work on the northbound lane behind concrete barriers during that time.

This section of Highway 35 has been closed since Oct. 2 for repairs to damage from winter storms. Crews excavated the site, constructed a soldier pile wall to support the damaged northbound lane, and installed drainage systems.

Monthly caregiver support group to meet Saturday

If a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, a caregiver support group can offer an opportunity to connect with others.

In this facilitated support group, participants will connect with each other as they experience mindfulness practices designed to open the heart to compassionate caring and resiliency. Participants will discuss new information, share stories and discover a deepening connection with their growing caregiver community.

The Scotts Valley caregiver support group meets on the second Saturday of each month, with the next meeting set for Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10-11:30am. These meetings will be held via telephone and Zoom until further notice.

To register or for more information about this and other support groups in the area, call 800-272-3900.

Property taxes are due Monday

The first installment of 2023-24 property tax bills is due Monday, Dec. 11.

Bills are available to view and pay on the Santa Cruz County Treasurer-Tax Collector website at santacruzcountyca.gov/Departments/TaxCollector.aspx. Residents may view their bill, make payments, see if they have any outstanding or delinquent property taxes, or learn about senior/disabled persons exemptions, property tax postponements and other information online.

Residents can pay property taxes online by E-Check at no cost or by using debit/credit cards, though service charges apply. Payments made or postmarked after Dec. 11 will be assessed as a late penalty.

If planning to mail a check for the payment, make sure the envelope has a U.S. Post Office postmark on or before the due date to avoid late penalties. If bills have not been paid yet, the County recommends obtaining a hand-stamped postmark at the U.S. Post Office as proof of timely payment.
