California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Cruz Area has reported a 32% reduction in electric bicycle (e-bike) related crashes within its jurisdiction in Santa Cruz County following the launch of Operation Safe Pedal (OSP).
In 2024, CHP investigated 53 e-bike crashes, which included a fatality in the jurisdiction. After launching OSP at the start of 2025 and conducting an active outreach program, investigations dropped to 36 crashes in 2025.
OSP focuses on raising awareness about safe e-bike operation through community outreach, school presentations, social media engagement and enforcement. Since its launch, CHP Santa Cruz Area personnel have conducted more than 40 presentations, bicycle rodeos and safety booths at local schools and community events across Santa Cruz County.
Lt. Boles, acting commander of the CHP Santa Cruz Area office, stated, “We are committed to continuing outreach and enforcement to further reduce crash risk and promote safe riding behaviors among e-bike riders of all ages. We believe that e-bikes are a great means of transportation, but it must be done in a responsible and safe manner.”
