‘Wolf Creek’ radio drama to premiere on KBCZ

A new five-episode radio drama, “Wolf Creek,” will premiere on KBCZ 89.3 FM Boulder Creek Community Radio Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m.

The series was written, produced and sound-designed by Darren Lee, a local KBCZ DJ, sound producer and engineer. Each episode is approximately 15 minutes long and offers a modern take on werewolf mythology, centered on a scientist seeking to eliminate a family’s ancient bloodline.

The production features 16 local performers, including KBCZ DJs and members of the San Lorenzo Valley community. Lee also created the sound design and foley effects for the series.

The broadcast can be heard at 89.3 FM or streamed online at KBCZ.org.


Open Studios returns for 41st year

Santa Cruz County Open Studios will return for its 41st year with more than 350 artists opening their studios, homes and creative spaces to the public across three weekends in October.

The free, countywide tour runs Oct. 3-4 in South County, Oct. 10-11 in North County and Oct. 17-18 countywide, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A new mobile app will help visitors find artists, save favorites and get directions.

St. Andrew’s celebrates Feast of St. Francis

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ben Lomond will observe the Feast of St. Francis with an outdoor service Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m.

The service will include the Blessing of Animals and Holy Communion. Community members may bring their pets, or a photo or remembrance of a current or former pet, for blessing and prayers of thanks.

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion, regardless of religious affiliation or spiritual path. A reception will follow.

Supervisor speaks to North County Democrats

Fifth District County Supervisor Monica Martinez will speak at the Democratic Club of North Santa Cruz County meeting Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Martinez will discuss the current state of the county and challenges ahead, including anticipated federal funding cuts in 2027. She also will discuss Measure E, which will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot, and its potential role in supporting essential services affected by the funding cuts.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Scotts Valley Water District Santa Margarita Community Room, 2 Civic Center Drive. Members of the public are welcome.


Concertino Strings opens sixth season

Concertino Strings will open its sixth concert season with performances Oct. 14 at 11:30 a.m. and Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. at Boulder Creek United Methodist Church, 12855 Boulder St.

The 25-member string chamber orchestra, directed by Joanne Tanner and Renata Bratt, includes musicians from throughout Santa Cruz County.

The program will feature selections from Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite,” including “The Hall of the Mountain King,” “Anitra’s Dance,” “Åse’s Death” and “Solveig’s Song.” The concert will open with Arcangelo Corelli’s “Concerto Grosso No. 9,” featuring Martin Gaskell on harpsichord.

Harpist Jennifer Cass will join the orchestra for “Solveig’s Song” and Grandjany’s “Aria in Classic Style” for harp and strings.
